Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve, Alexander Valley, Sonoma County 750 ml

Visitors to the winery often ask what “Reserve” cabernet means to us. It’s simple. Reserve means the winemaker’s careful blend of individual wines made from time tested, meticulously farmed sections of some of the very best vineyards in Alexander Valley. Select areas within each vineyard are hand harvested individually, fermented separately, and aged in the finest French oak barrels. After about six months, each lot is tasted and graded, and only the highest graded wines that display depth, concentration, and age worthiness are considered for Reserve cabernet. The blend is then assembled, and the wine is returned to barrels to facilitate flavor integration. The wine is aged an additional 12 to 18 months, depending on the vintage, before bottling.

Rodney Strong Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml

Over thirty years ago Rod Strong observed that the cool, foggy nights that regularly enshrouded the winery, though crucial in the ripening process of fine pinot noir and chardonnay, were not ideal for growing cabernet sauvignon. For that, Rod would have to look north, to the Alexander Valley, where the days are warmer and the strong influence of the cool Pacific Ocean is diminished. Today we farm over 250 acres of prime cabernet sauvignon in the well drained alluvial and volcanic soils on the benches and hillsides of the celebrated Alexander Valley.

Schrader Old Sparky Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 1.5 ml

Rated 100 The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Old Sparky, which is essentially made from clone 4 from two separate blocks, clone 6 and clone 337, is another perfect wine from the Schraders. I suppose it’s a little boring to say, and perhaps I can be accused of creating unrealistic expectations on the part of readers, but this is as great as Cabernet can be. Tasting like a first-growth Pauillac, the wine is opaque purple and has a fabulous nose of lead pencil, spring flowers, blueberry and blackberry and the telltale cassis. There is also some licorice and sweet oak, the tannins are ripe, and the wine full-bodied. Built like a skyscraper, with an incredible finish (like most of these wines) going on for 50 seconds to a minute, this amazing wine should still be drinking splendidly well at age 25 or 30.

Shelter Cabernet Sauvignon 750 ml

Shelter Wine Company is the brainchild of David Stevens and a New York City wine broker. David also owns 750 Wines with his wife Monica (specializing in high end, limited production boutique wineries) located in St. Helena.
All of the Shelter wines are sourced from high end Napa area vineyards. David has many contacts within the area wine industry and is sometimes approached by vintner's who want to sell their "juice". This "juice" is not second label stuff - several wineries have very strict protocols about how much wine they produce, or find themselves not wanting to take on the additional workload that extra production brings, and this is where Shelter comes in. As a result, the wine has already been hand crafted by area vintners by the time Shelter does their final blendings. The locations and vineyards are secret which helps add to the the mystique of their wines! Let their wine speak for itself, Shelter will not bottle anything that they feel is not up to their exacting standards.

Silver Oak Alexander valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 750 ml

Our 2011 Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a harmonious and vibrant wine. This full-bodied, classic expression of Alexander Valley Cabernet in a cool vintage has a bright ruby-red color with purple undertones. The nose exudes aromas of black cherry, cedar and black olives. On the palate, its dried herb, cocoa and lavender flavors are framed by dusty tannins and a savory texture. The wine finishes with lively acidity and a lingering persistence. Given proper cellaring, this wine should give drinking pleasure through 2029.
